Working/Research Experience :

Dr. Pradip K Sikdar had his education at the University of Calcutta (Geology/Hydrogeology) and University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, U.K (Integrated Coastal Zone Management). He holds First Class Graduate and Post-graduate degrees in Geology from the University of Calcutta. A teacher by profession and hydrogeologist by education, he was a Senior Scientist and Executive Secretary at the Centre for Study of Man and Environment, Kolkata and then joined as a Lecturer in the Department of Applied Geology, Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad before joining the Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management in the Department of Environment Management. Currently as the Associate Professor of the department he is actively engaged in research and teaching water resource management, groundwater hydrology and environmental impact assessment. Dr. Sikdar has over 20 years experience as hydrogeologist in diverse hydrogeological terrain which includes semi-arid, deltaic and coastal systems. His primary research interests are groundwater flow and solute transport modeling and groundwater-surface water interaction in arsenic contaminated aquifer system and urban aquifer system in the Ganga-Brahmaputra deltaic region. He is also interested in sustainability of water supply in the Bengal Basin and also in the semi-arid regions of Eastern India, and in geostatistical methods for modeling chemical evolution of groundwater, particularly in deltaic and coastal systems. He has undertaken more than 30 R&D and consultancy projects. He has just completed a research programs on ‘Migration of Arsenic in the Aquifers of West Bengal’ funded by the UNICEF in collaboration with University College London (UCL), IIT Kharagpur and Centre for Ground Water Studies (CGWS). At present he is carrying out research programmes on Testing the Palaeosol Model of Arsenic Pollution of Groundwater funded by NERC, UK in collaboration with UCL and CGWS and Numerical modeling of Groundwater flow of south Bengal basin with special emphasis on arsenic transport funded by DST, Government of India. He is also working with Dr. Clifford I. Voss of the USGS and Dr. Holly A. Michael of University of Delaware, USA to study the effect of pumping in and around Kolkata City on the advection of groundwater from contaminated sites such as the Dhapa Solid Waste Dumping Ground and East Kolkata Wetlands. Earlier Dr. Sikdar had collaborated with them to prepare groundwater model of the arsenic-rich aquifer of the North Bengal Plain. Dr. Sikdar has also a strong background in environmental impact assessment and management plan of various mining, industrial, ship breaking etc. projects. He provides technical and management advice on a wide range of subject dealing with watershed management, natural resource development and environmental management issues to industries, consultant groups and NGOs. Dr. Sikdar has several students for Master and Doctoral and Post-doctoral research work. Till date three research students have been conferred the Ph.D. degree under his guidance. Dr. Sikdar is also a Visiting Faculty in the Department of Geology, University of Calcutta, Department of Environmental Science, University of Calcutta and the Department of Geology, Presidency College, teaching Hydrogeology and Water Resource Management. Dr. Sikdar has delivered several lectures in national and international conferences, seminars, workshops, UGC sponsored refresher courses, etc. He has also organized many seminars and conferences and has developed courses on ‘Groundwater Development and Management’ and ‘GIS techniques and Application’ for professionals and research scholars working in the field of groundwater and environment management. He is serving as a Reviewer of many national and international journals and is also in the Board of Editors of many national journals. Dr. Sikdar is the member of several professional associations and has published over 60 research papers in international and national journals, conference proceedings etc. He has also co-authored a book titled "A Text Book of Environment" and has written chapters in nine books. Dr. Sikdar has also edited two books on "Interlinking of Indian Rivers".
