He has worked for more than 30 years in Multinational Corporation, Indian Business Houses and Public Sector Enterprises. He has experience in industry such as Shipping & Transport, Fast Moving Consumer Products, Pharmaceutical, Media and Education.

Currently, Director at the Indian Institute of Social Welfare & Business Management, he was the first Dean of the Business School at the IIT Kharagpur, Prof. Dutta has been an advisor to large number of Business Organisations like the Ispat Group, Usha Martin Group, S K Bajoria Group, etc. He is currently serving in the Board of Computech International, Interra IT, Millenium Information Systems, all IT companies and Chairman of allindia.com Ltd. Currently. He is also in the Board of MSTC, a Government of India undertaking and a member of the Planning & Advisory Board of EXIM BANK OF INDIA.

At present he is serving as a member of the Executive Committee of Bharat Chamber of Commerce, All India Organisation of Employers (AIOE), State Labour Institute, West Bengal Productivity Council, Calcutta Management Association, Indian Association for Productivity, Quality & Reliability. He is the Chairman of Centre for Research in Materials Management and President Development Dialog.
