The Naval Tata Centre of Excellence in Sports Management of the Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management conducts a one year full time Post Graduate Diploma in Sports Management (PGDSM) during the day. This is a diploma offered by the Institute.

 

 Objective

 

                     This is a SOCIAL WELFARE PROGRAMME of the Institute.

The Course is Designed to give students a professional exposure to the structure, economic impact, organization, marketing, funding of the sports Industry as well as current trends in sports and relationship between sports and the mass media. The students will learn about the laws and regulations that all leisure and recreational organizations have to follow.

  More specifically this One Year Post Graduate Diploma Programme has been designed to cater to the demand from various institutions and industries for appropriately qualified people to handle Sports related jobs.

 

 

The programme would assist the students to gain a thorough understanding of the multi-dimensional importance and the value of sport. The candidates would also acquire business skills relating to public relations, marketing and entrepreneurship, which would assist them in the administration of institutions engaged in various sporting activities.

The programme would expose students to the tools and techniques of sports administration including those of event management as well as acquaint them with contemporary trends and issues in sport. The sports science section would cover sports medicine, sports psychology, sports physiology, sports therapy and health promotion.

The course has dedicated modules to cater to the emerging needs of the sports Industry, Modules on Sponsorship, Broadcasting, Celebrity Management, Research Methods, Media Management, Crowd management and infrastructure management.

Sports law is growing to be an important aspect of the sports industry, The knowledge of the legal aspects of sports business is a tool which each manager must posses. The course has a subject dedicated to the legal aspects of sport.

Throughout the world, much research has gone into studying the humanitarian aspects of sport, Therotical sports studies have delved deeply into understanding the nature of sports effects on society. The Naval Tata Centre of Excellence believes that sport has a major role to play in the society, for nation building, for solving societal problems. The course recognizes the impact of sport in society and provides insights and modules on various aspects of sociological, philosophical and therortical aspects of sports studies.

Each Sport is unique and has its own nuances. Organization and structures of team games are different from individual games. Similarly mass based games need to be managed differently from niche games. A special series of lectures has been devoted to understand the nuances of these individual games. Students are exposed to games like cricket, Football, Tennis, Rugby, Horse Racing, Golf and Fomula -1. These lectures are delivered by guest faculty who have had tremendous experience in these games.

The role of fitness and leisure in today's lifestyle is known to all. The fitness industry is growing in India at an amazing pace. The course incorporates a series of lectures concerning this part of the industry, including Fitness, Leisure and country club management.

The programme has been designed and developed for the benefit of candidates, particularly those with a passion for sport, who wish to make a career in the sports and entertainment industry. The orbit of the programme would assist even those who are at present actively connected with sport in an administrative capacity to develop their sport-oriented job skills.

Eligibility:

Minimum Qualification is a graduation degree (preferably with Honours) in any discipline from a recognized University

Age Limit:

Maximum age limit 30 years relaxable in case of persons already working with Sporting bodies, Academies and organizations

Selection Procedure :

Selection is made through a written test in English, Final Selection is made through group discussions and personal interviews from the candidates who will qualify in the written test. No of seats 30.

Course Fee:

Rs. 55,000 (including refundable deposit of Rs. 5,000 and library caution money deposit of Rs. 2,000)

Loan Facilities:

The Institute has made arrangements with a Nationalized Bank to grant loan facilities to candidates who are admitted to its courses

Alumni are holding good positions in various sporting organizations, Event Management Companies and Lifestyle Management Organizations.

Placement:

The Institute assists students in obtaining placements.

  • On the Job Training with the IFA for the Wotld Cup Football qualifying match between India and Japan at the Salt Lake Stadium.
  • Practical Training at Sports Authority of India, Tata Football Academy, Cricket Association of Bengal and the Royel Calcutta Turf Club and Many others.
  • Practical training at the Sunfeast Open for the 2006 and 2007 batches.

  • How to revive the game of football in India to its pristine glory was held in the Institute on 30th Auguest 2004 to mark the birth Centenary of Mr. Naval Tata.Mr. Chuni Goswami , Former Indian Football Captain , Mr Subrata Dutta, Secretary , Indian Football Association and Mr. Amit Sen, Vice President, Kingfisher East Bengal Club and Mr. Soumitra Bsu of ESPNSTAR participated among others.

  • A Seminar on Management of Football Clubs in Europe with a case sudy of Bayer Leverkusen was presented by Mr. Arunava Chaudhuri,Editor, www.indianfootball.com

  • An interactive session wih two American Basketball players, Mr. Omari Faulkner and Mr. Courtland Freeman was arranged in conjunction with the American Center to provide the students an exposure to sports in the USA.

  • Felicitation of Padmashree Sailen Manna, Olympian and Formar Indian Football Captain for his outstanding service to the game.

  • Olympic solidarity programme of IOC under the aegis og IOA was held in 2004 at the Centre.

  • Preparations and opportunities for the 2010 Commonwealth games held in September 2006.

Annual Seminar

Right from its inception it was decided to hold an Annual Seminar to address various nuances of the nascent sports industry and get expert opinion in this field. thus:

  • In September 2003 a national Workshop on promotion of professional Management in the field of sport in India was held in Kolkata.
  • In January 2005 a National Seminar on Indian Sports: A road map for the next two decades was organized in Kolkata cross section of the Stakeholders namely Sports administrators , Corporate Sport Sponsors and Representatives from the media graced these occasion
