Genesis of IISWBM

The Indian Institute of Social Welfare & Business Management (IISWBM), Kolkata was established through a resolution adopted by the Syndicate of the University of Calcutta on April 25, 1953,with the visionary chief minister of West Bengal,Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy as the first President of the board of governors and Prof D.K Sanyal as the first Director. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India had laid the foundation stone of IISWBM. The Institute introduced the first programme on management education in India. The Golden Jubilee Celebration of IISWBM in 2003, therefore, also meant the celebration of ‘Fifty years of Management Education in India’. The Institute has the unique distinction of having its postage stamp released by the Government of India, Department of Post to commemorate its Golden Jubilee.

The Institute after its establishment started offering the Diploma course in Social Work (Labour Welfare), which was previously administered by the University of Calcutta. Diploma holders of this Institute were as per guidelines issued by the Government of India considered for appointment as Personnel Officers in Business Organizations.

On the recommendation of the Sir Jehangir Ghandy committee of 1950,the Board of Management Studies and the All India Council of Technical Education selected IISWBM(then known as AIISWBM) as a center for eastern region for the course in Business Management and thus started the first course on July 5,1954.

The Institute was registered under Societies Registration Act, 1860 with its present name of Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management (IISWBM). This registration apart from giving the Institute a legal status also felicitated receiving direct grants from the Central as well as State Government.

Since 1958 the Institute has been run by a Board of Governors which includes, among others, the Vice Chancellor and the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Finance), University of Calcutta, Principal Secretary, Department of Education, Government of West Bengal, representatives from all Chambers of Commerce, the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India and the All India Council of Technical Education as members. The Government of West Bengal through annual grants-in-aid meets deficits.

The Institute is located in the prestigious academic ambience of College Square where the University of Calcutta, Presidency University, Calcutta Medical College and the All India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health are also located. It has excellent infrastructure facilities in terms of a Central Library with over 52,000 books and over 200 foreign and Indian journals. IISWBM has two huge auditoria and three state-of-the-art seminar rooms with Video Conferencing facilities. The Institute focuses keenly on technology and in innovative programmes. The Institute boasts of a very strong faculty pool where both regular and visiting faculty helps in teaching.

The Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management was set up with the need to create professionals who could manage professional commercial organizations and business. Further the name itself suggests that the founding fathers felt the need to blend business management with social welfare through academic excellence. The focus at IISWBM has always been to create socially conscious professional managers.

The uniqueness of the Institute is that it is not just a management institute but one where emphasis is more on socially relevant programs, social welfare , proper management of public utilities along with creation of strong domain knowledge in various areas of general management.

The Institute offers the Masters in Business Administration (MBA) programme and the Masters in Human Resource Management (MHRM), Masters of Public Systems Management (MPSM) in four areas of specialization - Energy, Environment, Health Care and Hospital Management and Transportation and Logistics Management and the Masters in Retail Management which are all affiliated to the University of Calcutta. The Masters in Social Welfare program of the Calcutta University was reintroduced in the academic session of 2014-2016 and has been received very well by the academia and the government departments and non-government organizations.

The Institute also offers the Post Graduate Diploma in Sports Management and the Post Graduate Diploma in Media Management, which are both affiliated to the University of Calcutta. Further, the Advanced Diploma in Fire Management (affiliated to the West Bengal State Council of Technical Education) is also offered.

The Institute has been able to establish its academic credential and therefore for the first time in its history has been granted by the Calcutta University to offer the M.Phil and PhD Programs in Public systems, Management and Social Welfare affiliated to the University of Calcutta .This is also the only institute outside the University departments to be allowed to do so.

The Institute now has about 1200 students.

The faculty of the Institute takes up a number of research based consultancy work particularly to develop industry-institute interaction and with Government bodies.The faculty regularly ranks very high for their intellectual capital in the different ranking surveys. The Institute also conducts Management Development Programmes regularly.

In the course of its existence for over six decades the Institute has produced quite a few distinguished alumni who are internationally and nationally known for their contributions and command admiration of their colleagues in the areas of their choice. Some of the better known of these alumni are Professor Sumantra Ghosal of London Business School, Shri Sudhir Jalan, Former President of FICCI and Dr. C V Chandrashekaran, Managing Director of Balmer Lawrie group.

The Present President of the Board of Governors is the Minister for Higher Education & School Education & Parliamentary affairs, Government of West Bengal, Dr. Partha Chatterjee and the Director is Prof (Dr) Soma Bandyopadhyay who has formerly served as the Registrar of the Calcutta University.

The Institute has always envisaged taking up programmes that would be providing a cutting edge for managing activities having bearing on socio – economic development and public welfare, programmes that will help educating and training with knowledge and skills to understand social issues and concerns and thereby will contribute to good governance, spirit of service, culture of public – private partnership bringing an impact on civil society for public good and welfare.
