IISWBM - Dr. Surajit Chakraborty

Profile

Dr. Surajit Chakraborty had completed his Master of Science on Applied Geology from Jadavpur University and Doctorate from Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur in 2008 for his research work on "Assessment and Management of Groundwater Resource for English Bazar Block, Malda District of West Bengal, using Remote Sensing and GIS" from the Department of Mining and Geology. Since then, he was fully engaged, in full time research and teaching in the Department of Environment Management and contributed remarkably towards various environmental project sponsored by Government and industries. He has undertaken more than 10 R & D and consultancy projects in field of Environment, hydrogeology, hydrochemistry, water resources, remote sensing and GIS, pollution, mining waste etc. Published 32 research papers in international and national journals with high impact factors with more than 320 citations of his publication and 25 conference proceedings and 3 book chapters (Springer Publication) on various themes of remote sensing and GIS applications to environment, land use/ land cover, spatial data analysis, water resources, transportation planning, watershed management and environmental modelling. Dr. Chakraborty is the Life-member of the Mining, Geological, and Metallurgical Institute of India (MGMI) and Online member of The International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH/AIH) and Open Network Member of Indo-UK Water Chapter. He is the first to work on numerical groundwater rmodelling of North Bengal plain using MODFLOW with the assistance from United States of Geological Survey and from the University of Delaware's College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment, UK. He received the first prize as Young Scientists from Netaji Institute for Asian Studies, Kolkata on 15th March, 2006. Received the Professor Nirmal Nath Chatterjee Medal for important contribution to the knowledge to Economic Geology, from The Asiatic Society, on 3rd May, 2010. Dr. Surajt Chakraborty has 12 years’ experience as hydrogeologist in diverse hydrogeological terrain which includes semi-arid, alluvial and on hilly terrain. Dr. Chakraborty has been engaged with several industries and NGOs on a wide range of project dealing with micro-watershed management, effluent water quality from metal mine, natural resource development, environmental management issues, river basin study, catchment analysis, vulnerable mapping for the slum people and awareness generation. Completed project on finer-scale numerical groundwater flow models to understand arsenic transport in Jamuna sub-basin in Nadia and North 24 Parganas of West Bengal, funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India as a Co-investigator and on hydrogeological study of subsurface water flow and other characteristics of River Dwarakeswar in Bankura-I block funded by the Public Health Engineering Department, Government of West Bengal. Dr. Chakraborty was engaged in a joint collaborative research project with Central University Gujarat funded by UGC on "Delineation of groundwater potential zones using multi-band Remote Sensing data and GIS for sustainable water resources management in semi-arid hard rock terrain of Para block, Puruliya district, West Bengal" and with IIEST, Shibpur on "Determination of Ultimate depth for opencast mining at Khandri Mine, Maharashtra under MOIL'. Recently received a project on nomination basis from MOIL on Ecological Footprint calculation for Manganese Mine. Presently engaged as a coordinator of a certificate course on “Sustainable Environment Management” in association with CII.
