The MSW department (batch 2021-23) as a part of their Third semester industry visit, were taken to ITC Tribeni, accompanied by Professor Ajoy Bhar. We started from the college at around 8 a.m. and reached our destination by 10.30 a.m. We were initially briefed about the safety protocols and given helmets and earplugs for our safety at the factory floor. After the initial briefing, we were taken to a seminar room wherein we were greeted by one of the safety officers of the plant. He briefed us about the concepts of industrial safety and hygiene which are applied to this plant and which we could relate to our papers in the third semester.
Then, we were divided into two groups and one group went to visit the paper mill 1 and the other group went to visit the paper mill 3. Paper mill 1 manufactures decor paper and specialized paper whereas paper mill 3 manufactures cigarette paper. Coming back, we proceeded for lunch towards the canteen where Prof. Bhar had narrated to us about a significant strategy taken by ITC management quite some time back.....as a part of their HR policy, there is still no discrimination between the meals given to the workers and the managers.
Post-lunch, we were briefed about the HR policies by the HR head of the plant and the CSR policies of ITC Tribeni. Then, we proceeded to visit the first CSR project of the factory, which is a waste management project carried on by ITC with the help of an Ngo -'bitan'. They educate the neighbourhood people about the importance of disposing waste by segregating waste and then disposing them off and then they employ the locals to recycle the waste as fertilizers. Ther nonrecyclable waste is also taken care off by ITC, wherein the materials are transported off to Mumbai where there are technologies of ITC that can dispose those kind of waste. The second project under the CSR initiative of ITC is a skill development project in co-operation with Don Bosco skill development centre wherein students are trained in hotel management and hospital management for 10 months and subsequently given placement. For the youth of a suburb like Tribeni, this skill development centre means a lot. With this, we concluded our tour and returned back.
The students could all relate to their labour welfare papers and the guidance of Prof. Bhar was really helpful for us. Seeing all the laws being implemented in the factory floor and the hygiene and safety of the workers really taken care of, seeing the workers really happy to work there and the neighbourhood seeming to be tranquil and peaceful gave us the message that how important and crucial is the job of the management in any factory in order for the day-to-day functions to run smoothly.
